My name is Cindy and I recently completed my 10-week challenge at Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping in Bettendorf and I am proud of my results. I am a self-employed cosmetologist and have owned my salon for 27 years. My job requires that I be on my feet almost 40 hours a week. I’ve been married to my husband, Steve, for 39 years. We have three adult sons, three daughter-in-laws and five grandchildren. In between all of that, my husband and I enjoy dancing, hiking and traveling and I would consider myself to be an active person.
Before joining Farrell’s, my workouts consisted of climbing on the treadmill and the elliptical a few times a week, but certainly didn’t include kickboxing or strength training! I tried to stay active, but an injury to my IT band and sciatica sent me to the doctor and physical therapist. My doctor gave me a cortisone injection and I continued to see a physical therapist. With their guidance I was able to work and stay active, but I was still struggling with stiff and sore muscles at the end of a long workday. I knew something needed to change and both my doctor and physical therapist were on board with me joining Farrell’s.
My daughter-in-law, Brittanie, invited me to a class at Farrell’s. She joined Farrell’s Bettendorf when they first opened their doors a year ago. I watched her transformation and was impressed at her results. I knew that this program had to be something special to get her out of bed to work out at 5 a.m. for six days a week. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I must have asked her a million questions in the days leading up to my first class. Would I be the oldest person there? Will I be able to keep up? The only way to get over my initial fear was to give it a try. When we arrived, Pete, the head coach, greeted us. He was so welcoming, as were the other FIT members. Yes, I was awkward, uncoordinated and a little intimidated. I had never kickboxed before, but with Brittanie’s help, I made it through the whole class and I didn’t die! It was difficult, but it was also fun. I knew on that day that this was something that I needed to do. After returning for another kickboxing class later that week, I was hooked.
My first day of my Farrell’s 10-week challenge, I was so nervous. What if I couldn’t do any push-ups? What if I couldn’t run a mile? Again, the many warm and smiling faces of the FIT members greeted me.
Everyone was so kind and encouraging. When my initial testing was complete, I knew that I had a lot of work to do, but I was so proud of myself for facing my fears yet again. When I started my 10 weeks at Farrell’s I was asked to set some goals. Mine were pretty simple. I didn’t want to get injured and I wanted to gain both strength and flexibility. The 7 a.m. class was a perfect fit for my schedule. I met some amazing people who were also committed to working as hard as I was. I was not alone, and I knew that my classmates were always there to support me. I was starting to understand that this was not about keeping up with the other members of my class, but it was about challenging myself. It was about me trying to better myself everyday.
The first several weeks I was sore, but it is amazing what a little Biofreeze and a whole lot of water will do for you! Pete and the other instructors and coaches were so helpful in keeping me motivated. They push you to try harder and keep going when you think you can’t.
At final 10-week testing, I was surprised at my results. They were so much better than I had expected! I had increased my push-ups from 13 to 39. I had lost 5% body fat and almost 14 inches from my body. I also dropped two minutes off of my mile run time!* I was so proud of what I had achieved in my 10 short weeks at Farrell’s and was excited to see and feel the results! I no longer have IT band or sciatica issues that have plagued me for years. I had no idea how much increasing my muscle strength would change my overall quality of life.
My husband was a constant source of support during this time. He couldn’t believe I would continue to get up early six days a week to go to the gym. Also, my family and friends were always encouraging me with my journey. I know I talked about Farrell’s to all of them and my clients at work too. You know you love something when you want to share it with someone else.
My Farrell’s journey is not over. In fact, it has just begun. As I enter my 60th year I know that I can do anything I set my mind to. Although 60 was something I was dreading, I’ve come to realize that age is just a number. A quote I recently read said, “As you work your way through all kinds of challenges, from each one you will emerge with new strength.”
The strength I have gained from my experience at Farrell’s has forever changed me. It has given me the confidence to continue my journey here. I have not only changed physically, but mentally as well. I have achieved something that I never thought possible, not even in my wildest dreams!
