Each year Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping holds an Elite FIT Challenge. This is an 8-week challenge for our Farrell’s owners and full-time staff, including head coaches and managers, to compete for $1,000 and their name on our Elite FIT Challenge belt!
While this challenge is similar to our 10-week challenge, the timing is much more difficult as it runs through the holidays, beginning before Thanksgiving and ending after New Years. Self-discipline and personal accountability are essential to success!
Our 2018 Elite FIT Challenge winner was just announced and a huge congratulations are in order for Ryan Bishop, who instructs at our Farrell’s Beaverdale and Waukee locations and is also the head instructor for the Farrell’s Martial Arts Program at Farrell’s Waukee.
Ryan’s Story: This is my story… what’s yours?
It was my first full day of teaching taekwondo classes at Farrell’s U.S. Martial Arts. As a 16-year-old, I was excited for the opportunity that was given to me and wanted to prove everything I could to Master Brandon Miller. However, there was one obstacle that challenged me: my physical ability to teach the entire day. I was a little over 200 pounds at the time. It was right when summer hit and the Farrell’s Beaverdale room was 96 degrees. Right after the fourth class ended, I had to take a break as I was physically exhausted and had two more classes to go. I ended up finishing but was completely out of gas.
Later that evening, I went home and contemplated whether I should continue teaching. It was either make a positive change so I could continue doing what I love -- or quit. From all the time I spent at Farrell’s and what taekwondo has taught me, I intended not to quit and to make a big change in my life. I took advantage of a summer camp that was used for the high school football players to keep in top physical condition for the next season. I joined about halfway into the program, and the first day was one of the most physically demanding days I have ever been through. However, I kept pushing and went on, no matter what I felt.
I started the camp at 202 pounds and walked out at 178 pounds, 24 pounds later than when I started. Once my senior year of high school started, it felt great to hear compliments from other high school students.I kept at it physically, mentally and spiritually from then on. The rest is history.
As I got more heavily involved in the martial arts program, it was recommended that I try the Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping program. I completed my 10-week session at the Farrell’s Beaverdale location in summer 2012 and began instructing right away after I finished. I’ve taught thousands of students across several Central Iowa Farrell’s locations, making a positive impact on their lives just as this program has done for me. I will continue to be a positive role model for others to follow and to help guide them to be the best version of themselves.
Today, the percentage of U.S. children who are obese has more than tripled than the 1970s. One in five children ages 6 to 19 has obesity, a condition where a child is significantly overweight for his or her age and height.1
Typically, this condition is self-treatable and can be resolved within months. So why does this number continue to rise?
What can we do?
Have the power to Influence. Be that person to guide and help someone who needs the push, just like others have for you. Most people fail to do this without the help of others. Why? Because it takes a lot of discipline and patience that the average person does not have. However, it is important to be there for that person and make sure to keep them accountable for their actions. Make sure to talk your talk and walk your walk as this will create a sense of leadership in that person’s point of view. The reason why Farrell’s is such a great program is simple -- we are a family. No matter what you look like, what your goals are, why you are here, we have influential people to help change your life in a positive way. As long as you are willing to put in the hard work, we will be here to keep you from failing. Unless you decide to fail yourself, we will not give up on you!
As a child who was not quite obese, but considerably overweight, this was not an easy journey. It can be one of the hardest journeys you will embark on. But the rewards and treasures you seek are worth it in the end. Remember, it is never too late to change. But time is ticking. Are you willing to make the change?
Congratulations, Ryan, and continue living Life at Level 10!
